What is your pain point when it comes to solving innovation problems?
‘
How do you help a brand maintain consistency across multiple channels and platforms?
Wakefield: Consistent, cover-worthy images as the foundation of their brand to ensure they are communicating the same thing as their messaging.
Powell: What is the brand saying? Then try to maintain consistent visual identity, consistent brand voice, platform-specific execution, and regular brand audits.
Can you share a rebranding project that taught you valuable lessons about brand identity?
Wakefield: A healthcare consultant I worked with came to me with an incredible service offering, but was unclear on some things that would really sharpen her positioning. While she was already razor sharp on WHO her clients are, she hadn’t yet spent to the time to spell out WHAT their specific pain actually was, WHY that pain was so bad, and WHAT she specifically does to help them get peace of mind again. Once we did the work to clarify those things, it changed how she thinks about helping them, the value she brings to the table, and the clarity she can use to market her service to her audience. The lesson of brand identity is that you need to know the identity of your audience better than they know themselves.
Powell: I recently had the opportunity to rebrand a client I’ve worked with for nearly 10 years. Here was the challenge: They loved their original logo—and so did their clients. It had become part of their identity. But as the company evolved, they wanted to stand out, modernize their website, and create a brand that reflected where they were going. We researched. We explored. We even developed concepts inspired by the clean, modern direction you see from some of the Big Five consulting firms. The designs looked good… But something was missing. The heart of the brand. So we changed the approach: “Keep the old. Make it new.” Ten years later, my skills have grown. My creative eye has evolved. And instead of throwing away what we built, we used that growth to make it better. The new logo pays homage to the original trademark while introducing stronger typography, cleaner lines, and a fresh visual identity built for the next chapter. Because sometimes a rebrand doesn’t mean becoming something completely different. Sometimes it means honoring who you’ve been while creating room for who you’re becoming. That’s the power of intentional design.
What strategies do you use to build and maintain brand loyalty in a competitive market?
Wakefield: My Hype Tornado framework is something I use to help brands think through the process of turning clients into brand evangelists.
Powell: Brand loyalty starts with Relationship, not transactions. I try to keep the pulse on the target market keeping them engaged through outreach. keep a level of excellence that they expect from your brand. Evolve with the times but don’t lose the heart of the brand.
What’s your approach to navigating a brand crisis and rebuilding trust with audiences?
Wakefield: Honesty and transparency wherever possible are what resonate with people.
Powell: Listen Twice. Own All of It. Act Accordingly. So often, brands ‘put up their dukes’ rather than opening their ears. WE ALL MAKE MISTAKES! Brands are full of humans.
