Seasons change in business as in life. As the season changes from spring to summer, it seems a great time to discuss scaling-up a business. Many individuals who start their own marketing business are watching for signs to scale-up. Of course, every story is different. Some individuals start with a team, some have a plan, and others seem to pick it up and figure it out along the way. Often, scaling-up is on the horizon once a business has some success. We asked our experts this week about how they transitioned from spring to summer in this part of their journey to lasting success in marketing.
In the beginning of her career, Laine Belcastro from LMB DigiMarketing, LLC noticed an obvious opportunity to fill a need businesses were going to experience as technology developed. Belcastro realized, “I need to work with companies setting up technology, but also make sure they know, they are not pushing their clients away.” This gave her a unique value to offer businesses and paved the way to her growth.
On the other hand, Brittni Castilaw from Backstage Digital started with building the foundation with a plan to scale when the time was right. “We only took a limited amount of clients, and the reason for this was, so that we could build processes and procedures and implement technology, like our client dashboard…” says Castilaw. She believes this allowed her company to maintain services and quality as they scaled after 4 years of being in business.
Jeff Swartz from Ethic Advertising Agency began to scale and quickly found out he had some serious issues. Swartz admits, “I realized what it was, …Me being a consultant with a couple of people that worked for me, …And it wasn’t scalable.” Having your business built and prepared to grow is the most important thing. Swartz swiftly created a plan, made adjustments and has been growing since this moment of clarity in 2019.
Likewise, Marlon Medina from Golden Medina Services was attempting to do it all himself. “I want to be the whole alphabet. And so, when I realized that, is that cut into my productivity. That cut into my ability to service my clients.” Similar to Swartz, Median made a similar decision to make adjustments and was able scale-up his business and has experienced the growth he desired.
Each of our experts point out scaling-up successfully comes down to being ready and there is not a specific timeframe for when that should begin. Brittany Long from Win with Systems started scaling from the beginning and it was not good. She scaled too fast. “Growing slowly allows you to see the leaks that are happening and the processes that aren’t working,…” Long cautions others not simply wish for speedy growth. It may not be possible to plan exactly when a business scales, but being ready is the key. Our guests share more details and insights in each of their interviews.
