How long have you been in your industry?25-years
Why did you choose your industry?"I believe that the perfect job for most of us is the job we love so much that we would do it for free, but we do it so well that people actually pay us to do it. I'm humbled to have such a job, so that's why I do what I do."
Who are your typical clients?I love taking pictures of your distinctive homes and commercial buildings. My great joy comes when my Owner/ Designer/ Builder clients see my completed images of their work for the first time.
What do you like best about being in this industry?I get paid to take pictures of distinctive architecture locally and nationwide even though I would do it for free.
What are common problems you see?Too many would-be photographers are giving away their services for very low fees. Of course the buyers get exactly what they pay for.
What advice/tips do you have for clients?Q#1: How does your innovative approach to architectural photography benefit your clients?A#1: First off I'm a registered architect, and I know what's important to capture about a well-designed building. Quality images of your work drives business to your company. My goal is to represent your buildings and their details exactly the way that the designer intended for them to look, rather than make abstract or artistic representations. My objective is to make the whole building team of owners, designers, builders and suppliers very proud of their accomplishments.
When is your busy season? It varies all year round but gets slow around the end of the year because too many buildings have holiday decorations up that 'ruin' the possible pictures for general marketing.
What keeps you up at night?Wondering where I'll find the next spectacular building to photograph.
How do you market yourself to grow/expand your business?Mostly by repeat business and referrals. Of course referrals are only interested if my website proves that I am capable of the quality images that they desire.
How involved are you in the community?Very involved with the Ponte Vedra Presbyterian Church, HOPE International and other charitable organizations. Also active professionally in the AIAP and AIA. In my earlier years I was very active in ULI, NAIOP, ICSC, SMPS, AIA, Toastmasters, etc.
What is your favorite not for profit or charity?HOPE International.org: They give a hand up instead of a hand out to impoverished people in 26 countries around the world.
What advice would you give to someone thinking of getting into this business? You can't be everything to everybody. Find out what subject you are passionate about and photograph that subject every day. If that doesnt turn you on then try other subjects until you find the right one for you.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?Traveling for work and pleasure and swimming 3-miles per week.
