How long have you been in your industry?5 years
Why did you choose your industry? My mom is the Principal Broker of our brokerage, and my family has a large background in real estate. I left a 10 year career in hospitality when COVID hit, and decided to pursue a career in the mortgage industry to support my desires of starting a family and working for myself. It was the best decision I have made to date!
Who are your typical clients? As I am currently a licenced mortgage associate, I specialize in residential real estate with some commercial mix. I have clients ranging from first time home buyers, to high net worth real estate moguls. We have now launched our mortgage fulfillment technology, and we are expanding our services to other mortgage brokers and underwriters across the country.
What do you like best about being in this industry?I love the fact that you meet so many different people who work in different industries. The networking and connectivity potential is unparalleled! Coming from a background in hospitality, I also enjoy that there is still an ability to get to know new people and truly understand them - this also helps create sound financial strategies that align with their wants and needs.
What are common problems you see? There is a lot of confusion and a low barrier of entry. Sometimes people meet an advisor who doesn't treat this as their full time job, or act in their clients best interest. While this is not always intentional, not knowing how mortgages work can place people in less than ideal situations. There is unfortunately a lot of fraud, and the industry suffers from high scrutiny of required information.
What advice/tips do you have for clients? For my mortgage business, I try my best to explain to clients how their mortgage works. I focus on aligning the mortgage product with their needs and plans for the future, ensuring that we keep the budget in check, while trying to mitigate as much cost in interest and penalty as possible. For MBA Technologies, we want to give brokers back their time spent on mundane administrative tasks, while we automate the heavy lifting of the fulfillment process. We work with brokers to elevate their client's experience, and maximize the efficiency of their business.
When is your busy season? All the time! We do see surges in the spring and fall markets as buyers and sellers are typically more active at this time.
What keeps you up at night? The never ending desire to expand my horizons and learn how to be a better broker, and develop a better platform to elevate the standard of service in our industry. I spend far too much time researching new technology, mortgage trends, and keeping up to date on the trends of our economy.
How do you market yourself to grow/expand your business?Connecting with as many people as possible through LinkedIn, word of mouth, and constantly talking about what is going on in my professional life. A new lead may just be a conversation away - you just have to keep yourself at the top of everyone's mind. I also pride myself on offering the highest level of service to my clients, to earn repeat business and word of mouth referrals through hard work.
How involved are you in the community?I am actively involved in the mortgage brokering community, looking to offer advice and assistance to brokers across Canada. We recently welcomed our son to the world, so life has been a little hectic lately, but we have spent time volunteering for AARCS & Pawsitive Match to rescue animals from kill shelters abroad. We have a large family, and we spend a lot of time with each other!
What is your favorite not for profit or charity? As animal lovers, our family supports AARCS and Pawsitive Match!
What advice would you give to someone thinking of getting into this business? For Mortgages - find a good mentor who will take the time to teach you how to do your job the right way. There is no easy path to building your own book, but working under someone for too long who does not promote your growth is the wrong way to go. For starting a tech company, and in general, do your research! Take the time to learn what you preach better than anyone, and act with integrity!
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?Spending time with my family, raising my young son. Learning new things about the world, including new languages! I love to golf and ride motorcycles, and I have recently started getting back in to playing guitar. I also love to cook and spend a lot of time in the kitchen.
